When “late” is used to mean “no longer alive”, it always has a determinant in front of it.
Eg.
The Late President J. K Nyerere.
Our late grandfather left us a lot of money when he died.
Nearest, next:
Nearest is generally used to mean closest distance.
Eg.
I need some beer. Where’s the nearest pub?
Nextis used to mean the one after this one.
Eg.
I’m looking forward to our next meeting.
We are coming next Friday.
