The recent accidents in Port Vila were the results of bad driving behavior, said police. The Police Traffic Unit said the series of road accidents in Port Vila since Thursday last week would not have occurred, if drivers had followed the traffic rules. Sergeant Edward Kalura from the Police Traffic Unit said:” Police are playing their part to provide ongoing road safety awareness for road users.
“We (police) continue to remind drivers not to consume alcohol while driving and the consequences of neglecting road rules,” he said. “Alcohol has become the main cause of road accidents in Vanuatu last year (2017) and still leading this year.” The Vila Central Hospital confirmed one dead and several others suffering from minor injuries, following the serious accident on Thursday night. The driver of the vehicle was suspected to be driving under the influence of alcohol when the accident occurred. Asked why police arrived late at the scene on Thursday night, Sergeant Kalura replied: “Our traffic investigation officer was on-call after 11pm. “It takes time to get him from home to work and straight to the scene of the accident”.
